The battle for supremacy on the growing external hard drives market is fierce, with some big names fighting over the bone, like Seagate, Western Digital and Samsung. Toshiba was not one of the big guys, but could become one pretty soon, after launching the first 2.5″ external drive with 200 GB storage space, and USB 2.0 connectivity for data transfer.
The Toshiba drive has unfortunately only a 4200 rpm drive inside, which is a little slow for these days. But, since the external hard-disks are mostly used for computer backup and data transport, the low speed drive isn’t really such a big disadvantage and is used over the faster ones in order to cut the costs. Ont he other hand, having the 4200 rpm makes this gadget lack the FireWire connectivity, cause it couldn’t have taken full advantage of its improvements over the USB 2.0 in case it would have been incorporated.

Besides the sleek enclosure and the drive inside, the Toshiba device offers some pretty cool functions too: the shock absorption system, meant to protect the data in case of some minor physical shocks, the aluminium heat dispenser that wraps the HDD for a better cooling and the NTI Shadow technology that runs in the background, detecting file changes and automatically saving the updates to the external drive, hence, saving big chunk of space compared to complete backups.
All these for only 210 $ in the US. That’s not much for a Toshiba device so slender with such a big storage capacity, don’t you think?
