For most people buying a new laptop is an expensive purchase and with so much money and the increasing vitalness of laptops as a tool for work, pleasure and keeping in touch with friends it is important to make sure you look after it so it lasts you for as long as possible without problems.

The easiest step to maintain your laptop is to avoid problems in the first place by protecting it. Get a good quality laptop bag with padding to prevent it getting banged when travelling with it. Similarly get into the habit of being careful about placing cables, one of the easiest ways to break a laptop besides dropping it is to catch a cable trailing from it around your leg and trip over, wrenching the cable out of the laptop and probably breaking the port requiring an expensive repair job.

On the software side it`s a good idea to take out an on-site service repair plan which will cover both physical and software issues, especially if you are not technically experienced, this will help enormously with driver issues and general problems if you have someone professional on hand to help.

Viruses are an ever present issue and with growing data theft as well as keyloggers and other phishing software that can steal your credit card details it is important to set up a good anti-virus with a scheduled scan at least several times a week. Options include MacAfee Antivirus, the Windows built in scanning software, Spybot search and Destroy and many others. Disk defragmentation is an issue on Windows operating systems, though some of the Linux OS use file systems that are immune to this. Fragmenting is the process of data that should be read continuously from the harddisk getting split up and spread over the disk, slowing down your computer`s load time and responsiveness. Windows has a built in Defrag tool which you should schedule to run regularly to avoid this issue.

Keep the computer away from places that may get too hot, for example if you were to have your laptop on a table over a radiator it may suffer issues of overheating which cause it to noisily run the fan, possibly cause shut downs and at the extreme damage your computer. It is also important to avoid blocking the cooling vents on the side of the laptop and occasionally a good idea to dust these vents to prevent them getting blocked. A compressed air blower can is a good way of doing this. Likewise get a cloth, a glasses cleaning cloth is perfect for this, to keep the screen free of dirt and smudges.

Schedule regular updates to software and the operating system. All major pieces of software such as Microsoft`s Windows will have periodic updates and for the operating system and browser some of these may be very important security updates that a failure to update could result in your computer becoming infected with a virus or becoming part of a botnet, even being completely taken over by a remote attacker.

Now that you have a better idea of how to look after your laptop you may be looking for laptop deals to upgrade or get a new laptop, look around and do some research to find the best deal for you.
