Sony STE OLED: 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio at your fingertips
During CES 2007 visitors could admire Sony’s STE Technology that will allow the production of displays with high contrast ratio and color reproduction. And when I say high contrast ratio I mean a number in the millions range. Well, maybe not millions, but one million is pretty much if you consider that a regular LCD display for PCs has under 1000:1 contrast ration and LCD TVs and Plasma displays are just in the 2000:1 to 5000:1 contrast ratio range.

For many, Sony is the Apple of PC producers. Looking at their products you can see clearly why
And, as you know, contrast ratio is not the only important criteria for obtaining a good image quality. You have to consider also color reproduction and Sony doesn’t loose here either. They claim that both displays shown at CES (11" and 27" models), have a color reproduction over 100% for NTSC. The bigger model has the advantage of higher resolution, 1920 x 1080 (also known as 1080p HD), 10 bits per color channel compared to 8 bits.

Another thing that makes those displays stand up is their thickness, or should I say thinness.
The Japanese manufacturer hasn’t specified then those displays will be available for mass production or at what cost for the end-user but it can be easily anticipated by the state of the art factor that you’ll have to miss a few Bahamas beach parties to get one STE OLED display.
