Sky TV already had plans to go 3D sometime during this year. On October 1st, these plans became reality. Stephne Fry explained the basics on behalf of the BBC and from now on, people from UK have the option to watch Premier League and Avatar in 3D. For 14 hours a day, SKY 3D will transmit 3D content – including sports and movies.
SKY 3D was already avaliable for pubs around the UK, but since Friday, 1st of October, it was made available to residential locations as well. It will cost you quite a lot, though, as you can only buy it with the whole World HD package, which is priced at £61 per month. The channel is aimed at people who have bought 3D TV sets with active shutter technology, so you need to add the cost of all the machinery involved. This means an HDTV set with 3D capabilities (starting from $2000) and the LED glasses ($200-$300 a piece).
While this all sounds expensive, we’d like to point put that this is merely the beginning. As 3D content is becoming widespread and TV networks start filming in 3D, there will undoubtebly be more competition on the market, and lower prices. Up until then, we’re stuck with paying £61 a month to see Wayne Rooney.
