Phonescoop - the first folding mobile phonePolymer Vision must be the company of the week in mobile phones world, cause it presented at 3GSM World Congress the Phonescoop, the first mobile device with a folding screen.

Being smaller than the regular mobile phone, it comes with a 5" screen and great functionality. How come? Well, take a look at the video downwards or read the rest of this article.

That’s how small the folded Phonescoop is

So, a 5" screen right? That is the biggest display ever put on a phone, at least from my knowledge. But it’s not a TFT screen, no, it’s a paper like screen, like the one used on e-book readers. That means that it can’t show colours, but gives us up to 16 grey levels. Combined with high contrast and luminosity, the Phonescoop’s display offers a pretty good representation of what we want to see. The guys from Polymer Vision promised future improvements, the most important one being the possibility to play colourful moving images (videos that is…). Ah, and what i forgot to mention is that this screen can be folded when you don’t need to use the phone, for better protection and smaller size of the final device. You can see how this is done in the movie.

The main reason for buying one of this gadgets is the possibility of using it for reading different kind of materials, like e-books, online newspapers, news feeds, location maps, etc. Data can be downloaded wireless or via the EDGE/UMTS and DVB-H IP data broadcasting technologies. Besides that, the Phonescoop can also play music, that you’ll be able to store in the internal memory, with a capacity starting from 4 GB.

After you unfold it, you get a great paper like 5" display

Combine all these functions with a stand by autonomy of around 10 days. Yes, 10 days. That was made possible by the low power consumption screen. I was into buying a Sony Reader for a while, but this gadget might have earned me as a sure customer. Not sure yet how much will it cost or  when it will be available, but I’m definitely looking forward for the Phonescoop.
