PDA Phone or PDA + Phone?

We all know that the global tendency is to incorporate as many functions as we can into a single device. But what do you say about putting multiple devices into one, literally? Someone thought of that and filed a patent for a PDA with detachable phone.

You heard right: a PDA with a small detachable phone.

I don't know why the PDA in this schematics looks like a Treo, but it might be a clue

How does it work? When you need only the phone functions, you detach if from the back of the PDA, walk away, take calls, send text messages or browse the address book. The phone is powered by an internal battery. One placed inside the PDA (you can call it mother-ship if you want), it gets charged by the main battery or from an external source. At the same time a synchronisation is performed between the phone and the PDA.

When together the who devices communicate via a mechanical link. For short that’s how it works. If you don’t mind doing some reading take a look at the patent PDF.
