Microsoft SideWinder X5 gaming mouse review: good to go!

Microsoft SideWinder X5 gaming mouse review: good to go!

By: Ionut Popa  In: Accessories and Peripherals  Updated: Dec 8, 2011

One of the most important accessories when gaming is the mouse. Not once have we lost a battle or won it because of the accuracy and precision that this pointing device can provide. So what does a good mouse do? The difference between victory and defeat!

Let’s take a look at the Microsoft SideWinder X5 gaming mouse. It can bring you the joy of  2000 DPI Laser Tracking Engine and the producer says this thing is ‘’fast for action’’. In my opinion, the 2000 dots per inch is not the hot spot here (if compared to a 5000 DPI mouse, this one won’t make quite an impression).

The good thing I found was that, although this mouse it’s made out of plastic, it’s endurance seems to be at least interesting: it is estimated that the main button will last for around 10 millions clicks! That’s a lot of head-shots!

Let’s take it to the construction and design… well, five programmable buttons that include a DPI switch (2000 DPI, 800 or 400 you choose what’s best for you depending on the action in the game). The Microsoft SideWinder X5 gaming mouse is right handed shaped (that might be a problem if you are lefty)  and it’s made rather for huge hands (which will might feel uncomfortable if you have normal sized female hands, certain buttons could be hardly reachable). It’s also a wired mouse (so it will reduce a little bit your freedom of movement, but will provide better accuracy and less lag). Another good thing the producers have thought about is a special button that, once clicked allows one to check the perimeter when gaming. What haven’t the producers thought about is the weight settings…

In terms of performances, the Microsoft SideWinder X5 gaming mouse offers a decent accuracy (the 2000 DPI), five customizable buttons (some of them quite nice, such as the sensitivity settings and the one allowing perimeter checking), the possibility to create macros/assign them and the promise to last longer…best mouse for gaming? Hm…not really, but like I said, quite decent!

How does it work? Well, just like most mice one should connect it to a USB port and install it. The system has some demands such as: CD drive (when installing), 100 MB and it’s compatible with Vista or the XP.

Although this is not the best gaming mouse, it’s for gamers and gamers only! If you are a passionate surfer, for instance, this mouse is not the best choice you can make! No turbo scroll, unfortunately, and the quick-launch opens only games!

The price of the Microsoft SideWinder X5 gaming mouse is around 30 dollars. A decent price for a decent offer!   You don’t pay a lot, but you won’t get too much either…
