Memory Infinite - USB Memory in chainsIf you have enough memory sticks you know how annoying it is to carry them all around, to remember which one is free, which one has higher capacity and so on. Of course you might say: sell those old pieces of junk and buy only one of 8 or 16 GB. Yeah, I’ll do that first time I’ll win the lottery. Letting jokes aside, someone had a very nice idea, to connect in chains multiple USB drives, in order to increase storage capacity.

That someone is called Vicky Wei and it’s a designer. If he were an engineer he would have advised you to buy a bigger USB drive. The solution he imagined is pretty simple: every drive has a USB female and male connectors. If you want more storage get a new unit, and plug it in the existing one(s). Theoretically you can plug as many as you want, but remember that this is only a design, not even a prototype. So, as an engineer I am, I can’t stop asking myself how would be solved the problem of supplying power to all drives. I’m pretty sure that an USB port can manage 2 or 3 simultaneous drives but from there to infinite….

Anyway, design wise, Memory Infinite deserves an IDF Award for its practical and simple idea. Maybe we’ll see someone implementing this idea, but then again not all dreams come true.
