Fujitsu Loox T70U: Vista under 3 lbs

Fujitsu Loox T70U: Vista under 3 lbs

With Vista nearing it’s launch day for end-users, everybody is trying to get new products on shelves, to welcome rich ignorant customers who don’t know anything about the power requirements of the next generation Microsoft OS. I don’t want to sound anti-Bill Gates but I’ve tried Vista Premium on a dual-core CPU with 1 GB of RAM and I can say that I’ve never heard the hard-drive screaming so much since I’ve owned a 486 PC with 8 MB of RAM running Windows 95.

That’s why I don’t understand why anyone would want to install Vista Home Premium (one of the many Vista version, I think this one is without Aero interface) on Fujitsu’s brand new Loox T70U notebook, subnotebook. Those kind of products are usually good for traveling business CEO’s or fellow journalists like us (except that the first category affords to pay high figures for them). The term subnotebook refers not only to size but also to processing power. That’s why I don’t think putting Vista on a not so powerfull CPU, Intel Core Solo 1.2 GHz with integrated video card, is a good idea.

The only thing that conforts a Fujitsu Look T70U subnotebook is that the poor bastard that bought the little brother, Loox T50U, will get a less powerfull CPU, Intel Celeron M, less RAM, 512 MB instead of 1GB an a less spacious hard-drive, 60 GB compared to 80 GB will have a harder time running Vista, let along other programs. And to finish with the critics, I would want to know it the 4.8 hours autonomy claimed by Fujitsu were measured running Vista, or Windowx XP.

Now, after calming down a little, don’t get me wrong, those two subnotebooks are great, I would love owning any of those, but I wouldn’t try running Vista, even if it came preinstalled, like in this case.
