Blank OLED phone conceptWe all know everything about the already famous, even not launched, Apple iPhone. Many controversies lie around this gadget, with lots of admirers and lots of dissatisfied persons. The Blank concept, from the designer Chris Kujawski, shows us, in a way, what Apple could have done better regarding their big iPhone project.

The most interesting think about this design is the OLED touch screen used, instead of a TFT one, like the iPhone has. And this one brings along lots of advantages, such as lower power consumption, higher contrast and thus better suitability for watching videos or photos and a very smart interface, that allows us to eliminate unwanted elements and keep only the ones we need and use. For example, when you want to dial someone, only the numbers appear on the screen, and when you want to write a text, a full QWERTY keypad comes in front. Not to mention that you can watch full screen wide movies, without having other interfering elements, as this phone doesn’t have a dedicated keypad at all. The whole front face is covered only by the screen. How cool is that?

Apple’s fans may have something to comment about the Blank phone. First of all, the OLED technology is kind of expensive. Yes, that might be right, but i think the TFT multi-touch screen used on the iPhone isn’t a bargain too, cause how else could we explain the 600 $ that we have to pay for the gadget? And speaking of multi-touch, maybe that couldn’t have been able to be implemented on OLED screens. Maybe, but if you consider that the iPhone is stated to be THE mobile gadget for video playing, the screen should have been one of its best features, don’t you think?. And it seems it could have been a lot better.

The Blank beats the iPhone on many other fronts too, having a replaceable battery for extra stand-by time, 3G connectivity (yes, it’s true that Apple announced a revision of the iPhone with 3G technology scheduled for the beginning of 2008, but this feature should have been a must from that start) and 3 MPx camera, easy to use via the ergonomically placed shutter button on the side.

Chris Kujawski’s concept also touches another delicate subject: the telephone that suits its owner. Sometimes, when i recommend a phone to someone, i get the response: "No, this model doesn’t really suit me…". Oooook. I never thought about this aspect like this, but i guess that’s just me. Customers won’t have this compatibility problem with the Blank, cause it provides a series of static or dynamic kinetic skins for that huge OLED screen that wraps the entire front face of the phone. This feature would make your phone truly come to life.

And now let’s bring our feet back on the ground: the Blank is just a concept, and it would most probably remain one. But, it is for sure a couple of classes above the Apple iPhone, and has something to teach the American giant, or the other producers planning to launch a gadget like that in the future…
