Usually if you want a backup or to free up space on your hard disk the most comfortable and cheap option is to go for burning the data on a disc. The only thing left is to choose a burning application that fits our needs. In the following article I will present you 8 such applications.
The following applications are also compatible with external optical units.
Ashampoo Burning Studio Free
Until writing this article I did not use this application, but it was a pleasant surprise because it has a lot of functions: burns files and folders, backup and restore, burns and copies music, burns video files in DVD player compatible formats, burns image files, and can delete info from rewritable discs.
The application asks for free registration (the best thing is you do it after you install your software) after a few days (10) of use. Some may like the fact that it offers many functions, while others may consider it has too many and choose to look for a lighter software which only has the more common functions.

CDBurnerXP
It is an application that is pretty old and manages to fulfill the common functions when it comes to burning discs: burn data disc, audio disc, iso image, copy disk, and delete info from rewritable disc. I have used it and still use it sometimes because it is extremely easy to use. Its interface is very intuitive and you can even find a video presentation that will help you accommodate extremely fast with CDBurnerXP.

Deep Burner
The functions it offers are not out of the ordinary: burning data disc, audio disc, iso image, copy disk, and delete info from rewritable disc data discs. What makes it special is its simplicity, the fact that you can even find it in portable format, and it supports a lot of languages.
I have to say it is my favorite because it is really fast and portable. When I say it is fast I mean that if you move fast it will not take too long from starting the application to selecting the options and burning a disc. You can also see a video presentation of the software in action.

InfraRecorder
With InfraRecorder data can be written on data, audio, and video discs, discs can be copied, and disc images can be created and burned. I discovered this application with the occasion of this test and I can say it surprised me pleasantly.
The interface is not too beautiful, but its functions are well organized. The good part is that its functions and the application itself is pretty much customizable.

ImgBurn
With ImgBurn you can burn data discs, create ISO images from discs, or folders from the hard disc and find more information about the discs that are to be burned.
This application is recommended to those who want to be able to set a lot of parameters. This is not necessarily a plus because it makes things seem complex, and this may be intimidating for a novice user.
The application can be found in its unofficial portable version as well. For more details you can also read an article about ImgBurn.

BurnAware Free
The functions of this application are structured according to the types of discs that can be burned (CD, DVD, and BluRay). You can create data discs, bootable discs, audio disc, mp3 discs, copy discs, and find out information about the discs that are to be burned, or delete info from rewritable discs.
BurnAware Free is a bit similar to Nero, so if you are used to Nero it will be very simple for you to accommodate to it. For more details I recommend you read the article dedicated to BurnAware Free.

Active @ISO Burner
This application is specialized in burning ISO images to discs. Although it also comes in an installable format I recommend you the portable version. You simply open the archive and can immediately burn ISO images on to discs. It is compatible with ISO, IMG formats or any type of raw copying.
The advantages of this application are that it is specialized in burning images on discs and a lot of parameters can be customized. Considering the fact that it is portable and it is little you can keep it for whenever you want to burn images at an advanced level.

Explore & Burn
The main advantage of this application is that you can select the files that are to be burned on to the disc directly from Explorer, even if it lacks advanced options.
This application is not recommended because it is not customizable, but I decided to present it in order to ensure diversity. Maybe some people will like it.

In the end I would like to clarify that this article does not represent a top; it is just a presentation of several burning discs applications. The order in which I presented them is purely based on subjective reasons so it should not influence you. Novice users should be able to use any of the applications, but it would help them to choose one that also has a video presentation.
